Osprey are back in town - another sign of spring

The Osprey are back in Merrickville! We had business in Winchester, and took a drive through town. It was a good opportunity to check out the nests. All of them had birds nestling in!
These birds eat fish, and the water has to be open for them to eat.

I captured photos and a video on a sunny day last year. It showed one feeding the other!

The osprey were decimated due to habitat loss and pollution. They eat fish, and they at the top of the aquatic food cycle. In the 60s and 70s, birds like this were increasingly unable to reproduce due to humans. They were the canaries in the mine, showing us the error of our ways.
Thankfully, they are on the increase.

Look who is back in Merrickville!
